My recent works revolve around a pair of red shoes that I call my “opera shoes”.
On New Year’s Eve 2014, I spent the end of year celebrations in Venice where we went to the New Year’s concert, at the La Fenice Opera House. It was a black tie evening and I wore a sumptuous red satin evening dress with the red shoes that I had bought for the occasion.
The use of red shoes as a symbol of either female power or submission is a recurring theme in stories, films and art history. Fancy shoes are a commodity associated with rites of passage, sex, upward mobility and power.
In these works, I have taken the image of my red shoe to suggest the body of a woman, of all women, who have been attacked or murdered, often by their own partner or ex.
