The Violence that we experience is not only physical, the burden of care of our families and/or the lack of financial independence, are also forms of Violence.
This new tryptic of paintings inspired by my photos series of the same name, show me shedding coats, my outer skin, like the many social roles that I have carried and carry still, as a daughter, a mother, a friend and a wife.
Women often carry most of our social responsibilities : child-rearing, domestic labour, caregiving, professional performance, societal expectations of health and beauty.
This burden of care is like a slow burning fire that consumes all our energy and results in silencing many women through sheer exhaustion.
I chose the title of Phoenix Woman to suggest the necessary destruction and shedding of social burdens to be made anew with hope of a new balanced life and empowerment.

In these works, I have taken the image of my own red shoe to suggest the body of a woman, of all women, who have been attacked or murdered by their intimate partner or ex.
From 2022 to 2025, I created a series of paintings and photographs that feature my red shoes, shoes that I call my “opera shoes”.
On New Year’s Eve 2014, I spent the end of year celebrations in Venice where we went to the New Year’s concert, at the La Fenice Opera House. It was a black tie evening and I wore a sumptuous red satin evening dress with these red shoes that I had bought for the occasion. I have rarely worn them since and they have become an important element for me, included in most of my work.
These shoes represent all women who are or have been victims of violence. They will not be forgotten.

These three paintings that I created between 2022 and 2024 focus on the victimes of femicide by intimate partner.
In Remembrance, painted in 2022/3, includes the names of the 122 women, who were murdered by their intimate partner in France, in 2022.
Unlike some other European countries, the number of femicides in France each year, increases constantly. In 2025, 170 women were murdered by their intimate partner in France.
The two following works She Leaves Him, He Kills Her, are studies on paper that I made in preparation for the #Femicide IV painting in The Red Shoe painting collection.
